about

Internships

Sarah’s Inn is committed to community partnerships; and part of that commitment is to the next generation of advocates and activists. Our program exists to broaden the work we do with clients and community members and to provide leadership and supervision opportunities for staff. We are also committed to enhancing the skills and knowledge necessary for our students to respond to victims of domestic violence and communities dealing with domestic violence within their chosen profession. Our supervisors have years of experience in their areas of expertise as well as supervising staff and students.

Internship Opportunities are available across our different programs including:

•  Intervention/Counseling and Advocacy Program

•  The Training and Education Program

•  The Together Strong Prevention Program

FAQ

Can undergraduate students intern?

Yes, we offer internships to undergraduate students in addition to Masters level students.

What academic programs tend to intern?

On the Masters level, the majority of our interns are in graduate programs for Social Work or Counseling. For undergraduate students, we work with a lot of Social Work, Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Gender Studies majors. If you want to intern but do not see your field of study listed, please email us at internships@sarahsinn.org to see if we have opportunities that match.

What is the length of the internships?

Our main internship cohort lasts the length of the academic year from August until May/June. We have also hosted students who intern from January through August or December, or just the summer months, depending on the needs of the agency and our supervision capacity. We ask, at least, for 16 hours per week at a minimum.

Does it meet supervision needs?

Each internship program is different based on the professional background of the program supervisors. In our Advocacy and Counseling and Partner Abuse Intervention Teams, we have supervisors with MSWs and LCSWs, which would meet the requirements of most schools. Our Prevention team has a supervisor with a Masters in Public Health. If you have questions about supervision requirements, please email us at internships@sarahsinn.org

Do I need a car to intern?

Depends on the program. If you are working mainly out of our main office in Forest Park having a car is not necessary, although it can be helpful. We are a mile walk from the CTA Blue Line (Harlem - Forest Park Stop), in addition to being off of two PACE bus routes. For mostly off-site programs, such as Prevention and Legal, having a car is necessary as you will be traveling between schools, the court house (for legal) and the office regularly.

Are there remote opportunities?

No. The expectation will be for interns to be on site for their internship.

Do you have paid internships?

No, we do not have paid internships at this time.

What is the application process?

To apply, you will email your resume, cover letter, and our internship inquiry form to internships@sarahsinn.org. The inquiry form can be found on this page. Once we receive your application, the programs will review it and extend an interview if we decide to move forward with your application.
