about

Who This Program is for

The Sarah’s Inn Partner Abuse Intervention Program (PAIP) works with individuals who are ready to change their violent and controlling behavior towards intimate partners. Participation currently includes a combination of voluntary and court mandated clients. The services are available in English and Spanish and are confidential. Currently, we serve men who identify as male and heterosexual.

For other groups needing services (i.e. women, LGBTQ+, etc.) please try the following programs: Salvation Army, Center for Advancing Domestic Peace, and La Familia Unida.

Program Philosophy

Our philosophy is that abusive and controlling behavior is learned over time; therefore, it can be unlearned. Healthier behaviors can be learned by taking individual responsibility for choices, behavior, thoughts, and feelings. We insist that clients accept responsibility for their abusive and controlling behavior and stop this behavior immediately. We teach alternative skills in stress management and conflict resolution. We confront socialized gender/sex role stereotypes and family of origin experiences that influence the learning of abusive and controlling behavior. We assist and support clients in learning to recognize and take responsibility for their emotional needs and encourage them to develop appropriate ways of communicating and meeting their needs.

Program Description

Program consists of a phone screen, followed by an intake assessment for eligibility. Program enrollment and eligibility is determined by (1) behaviors that were related to intimate partner violence, (2) some level of accountability for behaviors, and (3) ability and willingness to work within a group dynamic. If accepted participants attend an orientation workshop and then will begin attending weekly group sessions. There are 26 weekly group sessions required and each of the sessions last for 2 hours, and occur one time per week. Participants must attend a minimum of 26 sessions, complete satisfactory assignments, make weekly payments, and meet program expectations in order to be considered for successful completion.

Participants and referral sources are given monthly progress reports and status updates. Once completed the participant will receive a letter of completion and is welcomed back for sessions as needed for continued support.

Protocol Approved

The Partner Abuse Intervention Program is an Illinois State Protocol Approved Program.

Please feel free to read more about the administrative code and the process.

Participants who are court ordered (criminal court or DCFS) must attend a protocol approved program.
